After a year of work, a computerized set of media rich flash cards is now available. It can be used to teach English words to adult Karen students, or to teach the same words in Karen to English students. It contains 660 English words, spoken in English, written in English, spoken in Karen, written in Karen, syllables, phonics, parts of speech, and associated with two images, a word picture and a mnemonic scene. In addition, a full color 100-page booklet is also downloadable. To understand this approach, click on ANKI explained above

ANKI SOFTWARE

The name of each flashcard file tells whether it is for English or Karen students. If a Karen keyboard is installed then English students can practice typing Karen words. Must have Padauk font installed (see Link to Resources above).

Thanks to the KOM for giving us an opportunty to work with the Karen,
and to teacher Fred for helping us become better ESL teachers.

Young Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints spent two years learning the Karen Language. They then learned to write Karen and translated 86 songs from the LDS hymnal into Karen. This hymnal is not a publication of the Church. It has not been edited or reviewed for mistakes and no claims are made for accuracy. It is simply a worthy scholarly activity that may benefit individuals learning Karen. If you would like a copy, please email me at karen@karentalk.com to ask for a copy. You may also send any other questions to this same email address. My wife and I were senior missionaries and had a wonderful time working with Karen people in Minnesota.
